Relationships while Mercury is in Retrograde

I have been told not to start a new relationship while Mercury is in Retrograde because this relationship will have very little chance of succeeding.

What is this based on and why and is there any truth to it at all.

I do understand that we create our own destiny by our beliefs but would like to understand the meaning behind this.
