We as Shamanic Astrologers are committed to the fullest expression of life grounded on the foundation of As Above, So Below, As Within, So Without; a life recognizing and celebrating the union between Soul and Spirit, between Land and Sky, between Feminine and Masculine, between Body and Mind and between Shadow and Light. We are committed to a Life of Service, in facilitating the assistance of any sentient being desiring connection or reconnection to the magical link between Earth and the Heavens. Our highest priority and deepest motivation is love; and it is our love of the Magical connection between Land and Sky, and the Celestial Cycles, which animates our great privilege and joy in participating and co-creating with 'Great Mystery.'

Executive Summary:

The Shamanic Astrology Mystery School (SAMS) is organized under the  Harbingers of the Turning of the Ages (HOTA) a Corporation Sole, which is recognized as a non-profit organization.

The SAMS Organization is led by Founder and Executive Director Daniel Giamario, and Co-Director Cayelin Castell.  Organizational tasks are completed by eight volunteer-led committees, supervised by Managing Director Peter Klein

Shamanic Astrology is an evolving system sourced by Daniel Giamario in the early 1980’s that has emerged from the direct experience of Daniel and others in their relationship to the unfolding mysteries.

 The following principles are the basic foundation of this system.

• Shamanic Astrology’s foundational philosophical truth is from the opening lines of the Emerald Tablets of Hermes, "As Above, So Below, As Without, So Within”
• Shamanic Astrology is experiential and earth-centered.
• Shamanic Astrology is ceremonial and participatory, and operates from a mythic perspective.
• The practitioner of shamanic astrology is trained to track and understand the planetary cycles and their relationship to the process of initiation.
• Shamanic Astrology links to modern psychology through the use of archetypes.

The Vision of SAMS/HOTA is to manifest three versions of our organization.  These include:

• A Virtual School, including Internet Classes and Correspondence Courses
• A Nomadic School, with Teaching Practitioners traveling the world holding teaching events in various locations
• A land-based school, currently being developed on land gifted to us in Southern New Mexico

Introduction:

WHAT IS SHAMANIC ASTROLOGY?

Shamanic Astrology is a rich blend of ancient and modern tools and techniques originally developed by Daniel Giamario. Initially inspired by the astrological renaissance of the late 1960’s led by Dane Rudhyar and the contributions of Asian and Indian cosmologies, it was a Mt.Shasta vision quest in 1981 that awakened the shamanistic and experiential elements.  Therefore, this astrological paradigm is founded on the direct knowledge and experience of the night sky.

Shamanic Astrology is a practical and spiritual approach to the astrological mysteries. The essential intention of this system is to accelerate the personal and collective integration and expression of Life Purpose.  The specific tools and techniques used are designed to work without the aid of technology, meaning this system is applicable at any time.  The overall vision and intent of Shamanic Astrology is especially relevant as global humanity is now experiencing a great 26,000 year ‘Turning of the Ages’. Basically, what this means is Shamanic Astrology is sourcing the philosophical, experiential, and practical foundations of the astrological paradigm for the next 26,000 years.

WHO ARE WE?

SAMS is led by Founder and Executive Director Daniel Giamario and Co-Director Cayelin K Castell.  Following is biographical information about Daniel and Cayelin.

Daniel Giamario

Biography:

Daniel Giamario is the Director of the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School and creator of the Shamanic Astrology paradigm.  He joins together an academic background in Comparative Philosophy and Religion, with teaching meditation in two worldwide organizations, and extensive world travel.  Daniel learned astrology in the late 1960’s and was part of Dane Rudhyar’s humanistic astrological movement in the 1970’s.  After a vision quest experience on Mount Shasta in 1981, his astrological vision and spiritual path became more earth centered and a shamanically oriented astrology was born.  For many years, his specialty has been connecting astrology to the night sky at secluded locations and sacred sites to directly experience “As Above So Below”.  He has been a full time astrological consultant since 1984.

Shamanic Astrology has evolved as a rich blend of psychological, mythological, spiritual, and shamanistic elements, specifically designed to assist in the unfoldment of the individual’s life purpose and in navigating this pivoltal point of the Turning of the Ages.

In the early 1990’s Daniel Giamario, with the help of Cayelin Castell, began the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School, a land based, nomadic, and virtual curriculum for training counseling and therapeutic professionals in the use of the most important astrological tools and techniques.  By the end of 2006, 36 persons will have graduated as certified Shamanic Astrologers.

Daniel’s first book, The Shamanic Astrology Handbook, is available and a variety of other Shamanic Astrology books are in development.  He has written numerous articles for the Mountain Astrologer and other publications.  Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s Daniel Giamario traveled extensively, teaching workshops all over the country in over thirty locations.  He currently is traveling less, except for regularly scheduled events in the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School curriculum. 

Daniel lives in Portland Oregon, with his partner Kate McKee.  Together they have created the Mandala of Wholeness, a synthesis of Shamanic Astrology and Shamanic Breathwork, to powerfully and personally provide assistance to individuals in these rapidly accelerating times.  Daniel is available for personal and phone consultations, lectures and workshops.  Daniel Giamario is a lively and stimulating radio and television guest and hosts his own radio show on the Seventh Wave Network.

 Cayelin Castell

My greatest accomplishment so far is the raising of my four totally amazing children—Ryan, age 24, Ian and Jenna, ages 21, and Jeremy, age 16. In 1990 while in the process of being a devoted mom I experienced my first Shamanic Astrology event and I knew I had to know to more.

A big part of my learning came through transcribing taped classes by Daniel Giamario and then organizing the material into The Shamanic Astrology Handbook. From there I organized and edited numerous articles for Daniel and eventually starting writing my own articles, including the monthly Celestial Timings (since 1996).

I helped Daniel Giamario develop the Shamanic Astrology Certification Program and the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School under the umbrella of The Institute of Neo-Archaic Cosmology. New projects are underway for 2007 and beyond.

I have given talks about Shamanic Astrology to various groups, and have organized, promoted and taught Shamanic Astrology workshops in the US and in other countries. I have been a guest on several radio talk shows around the country and was a guest on a national cable TV show in 2002.

I have had several life-changing shamanic experiences, or initiations, in my life. You can read about one of these initiations on Merilyn Massey's Memorial Web site describing the story of how I (when I was known as Carolyn Brent) mid-wifed my mother's conscious death process and deepened my own journey and understanding with the death mysteries.

More about Shamanic Astrology

Shamanic Astrology is an evolving system developed by Daniel Giamario that has emerged from the direct experience of Daniel and others in their relationship to the unfolding mysteries. The following is an in depth description by Daniel of the current understanding of these mysteries.

Since a Mt. Shasta vision quest experience in August of 1981, I have been involved with an approach to astrology called Shamanic Astrology. One definition of shamanism describes it as the process of "death by intent." This is not accidental death, where one then returns to their body, but is a conscious choice to die and be reborn into the same body, many times. This "death" might be experienced as emotional, psychic, spiritual or a literal physical death and rebirth.

The following principles are the basic foundation of this system.

• The foundational philosophical truth of Shamanic Astrology (and arguably of everything) is from the opening lines of the Emerald Tablets of Hermes, "As Above, So Below, As Without, So Within." *1 This is considered to be literal, kinesthetic, organic reality, not an intellectual or spiritual abstraction. The patterns of the constellations and the cycles of the Sun, Moon and planets are the same as the patterns and cycles of the human psyche and the seasons of our lives. The relationship is not cause and effect. The practitioner of Shamanic Astrology is at home with this magical and geomantic intuition.
• Shamanic Astrology is experiential and earth-centered. The sky that can be directly experienced without telescopic or cybernetic enhancement has the greatest importance and power. Therefore, Shamanic Astrology would be as effective in a non-technological age. This view can be termed Neo-Ptolemaic, an astrology for terrestrial humans experiencing the sky, perceivable with unaided vision without light pollution.*2 The modern scientific reality of the heliocentric, Copernican worldview is essentially irrelevant to this approach. The practitioner of Shamanic Astrology is trained in the unaided eye knowledge and experience of the night sky, and the sacred rhythms and cycles and motions of the cosmos.
• Shamanic Astrology is ceremonial and participatory, and operates from a mythic perspective. Jade Wah'oo Gregory, an American Shaman, states "All true shamanic ceremonies are the mythic re-enactment of cosmological phenomena. The underlying principle of mythic expression is the dramatic re-enactment of cosmological phenomena."*3 Over time, the cultural ceremonies and mythic stories created by the various civilizations are draped onto the actual physically observed cycles of the planets and patterns of the constellations. The practitioner of Shamanic Astrology actively participates ceremonially with as many cosmological cycles as possible, which rejuvenates and reanimates the ability to source and co-create with the emerging mythos of a new epoch.
• The practitioner of shamanic astrology is trained to track and understand the planetary cycles and their relationship to the process of initiation. The death and rebirth motif of shamanism inspires Shamanic Astrology in two basic ways:
• The understanding and experience of the natural rhythm and cycles of the planetary bodies are linked to the initiatory process in human beings. The universe is supportive of, and power is accessed by, human beings who consciously participate with the initiation cycles.
• Planets (especially Venus, Mercury, and Mars) disappearing below the horizon, are seen as entering the underworld, dying and later being reborn when they rise above the horizon.
• Shamanic Astrology links to modern psychology through the use of archetypes. An ancient shamanism using gods, goddesses, spirits and animal essences, can now be expressed through a comprehensive, cross cultural, full spectrum approach to archetypes, inspired by astrologers like Rudhyar, and archetypal psychologists from Jung, to Ponce, Perera, and Bolen. The practitioner of Shamanic Astrology is trained with the thorough and comprehensive non-hierarchical view of archetypal possibilities.

Shamanic Astrology Mystery School Overview

As of May 2003, Shamanic Astrology as a body of knowledge has evolved to the point of becoming an actual mystery school now known as the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School (SAMS). 

It is a path and process of initiation in which the goal of the human experience is the realization of the self within a context of diversity and complexity that recognizes the wholeness of the human experience; light and shadow.

SAMS will operate in ways similar to other shamanic and magical circles of learning and initiation. SAMS is not a secular school of intellectual knowledge based on detached information gathering. Like many other mystery schools that have existed on this planet over the last 13,000 years certain understandings and protocols are established to ensure the quality and integrity.

The school is developing in different expressions: 

• At this time classes are convened in a variety of locals across the U.S.
• Plans are underway to develop a physical location for the school, on land that has been offered to SAMS in Southern New Mexico.  See also The Land Based School.
• Levels of participation in and support of the school are available through Basic Membership, Certification, and Apprentice programs.
• Plans are underway to develop a Virtual Teaching System, including Internet and Correspondence-based courses.
• A Teacher and Teaching Certification program is being developed in order to expand the class offerings in various parts of the country and also for the land-based school once this vision is realized.
• Deeper studies can be explored through the Shamanic Astrology Handbook, pamphlets and articles.

To date there are 36 Certified Shamanic Astrologers who have completed the entire program.  Many are practicing Shamanic Astrology though out the world, providing Readings, and Teachings, as well as incorporating aspects in their other healing practices.  Many of these practitioners are listed on our website at http://www.shamanicastrology.com/CertifiedShamanicAstrologers.htm

The Land Based School

Our proposed location for the Land Based School is in Southwest New Mexico, between Deming and Silver City near Faywood Hotsprings. This large high desert oasis is surrounded by unforested desert and rangeland. 

There is a larger tract of land known as Antelope Hill recently purchased by a visionary named Nik Shelton, who has gifted us the opportunity to build the school – and this location is also the planned future site of a larger Stone Circle and Visitor’s Center.

This high desert oasis is located very near the end of the Mimbres River Valley, an area rich with cosmologically oriented archeological sites. These sites include some of the greatest petroglyph panels in the country, as well as enigmatic ceremonial sites with Celtic inscriptions and ancient Standing Stones, plus this area is where the most beautiful cosmological oriented pottery was created by the Mimbreno culture.

The location for the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School is significant because it lies exactly on the same longitudinal meridian running from Aztec, to Salmon ruin, through Chaco Canyon, through Faywood Hotsprings and the lower Mimbres Valley, and then farther south to Pacquime located near Casas Grandes, Mexico. All these locations, along the same “Chaco Meridian” (see book and author) reflect the design and vision of a unique culture that erected ceremonial structures of cosmological significance from 1200 - 1450 AD. 

The Buildings and Initial Structures

Growing Vision of Structures currently includes:

• Large classroom with movable partitions and a large stage.
• 2-3 bedroom apartment with kitchen for caretaker and teachers – start with one apartment right away add more later.
• Large underground area for ceremonial kiva-like space and tornado refuge, storage etc.
• Outdoor amphitheater for lectures, theater and music
• Library
• Living units
• Kitchen facility dedicated to INAC
• State of the art compost solar bathroom and bathing facility

The campus design is off-grid and solar–powered whenever possible.

Larger Vision

Including but not limited to:

• Additional Buildings dedicated to each of the Archetypal Mysteries
• Additional Living Units
• The public Standing Stone circle and Visitor Center on Antelope Hill
• Gardens
• Agricultural Projects

Funding

SAMS is administered by the office of the overseer of the Harbingers of the Turning of the Ages, a Corporation Sole. INAC is a not-for-profit spiritual organization and donated funds are tax deductible. Funds are sought by the following methods:

• Donations
• Contributions
• Members and Supporters
• Benefactors

SAMS is already receiving tuition for core curriculum and other seminars, however like most schools it requires endowments and grants to prosper. SAMS is not a profit making organization.

Currently, we are in the planning stages of our land-based efforts, including finalizing the legal arrangements with Nik Shelton, and agreeing on our overall vision and plan.  Timing for the realization of this vision is based upon funding availability.
