Further Details On The Nevada Wilderness
Astrology Camp
This
wilderness camp is held in an extremely remote area near the
California/Nevada border on the Nevada side of the White Mountains. This
is a place far from any vestige of civilization, without any light
pollution or other distractions, and is truly an ancient sacred site. The
site itself is about 5000 feet in elevation in a high desert location.
Plan for windy conditions (usually the winds pick up
around Noon) and what remains of the summer heat. The days
at this time of year are cooler than in the
summer but still quite warm, the nights cool down and can even feel
chilly. The camp is located 321 miles
from Las Vegas, 214 miles from Reno, 57 miles from Tonapah, NV and 78
miles from Hawthorn, NV. You will receive more detailed directions when
you register for the camp.
This
is a full wilderness camp. You are responsible for your own camping
equipment including tents, food and water. The closest motels (several are
inexpensive) are in Tonapah, about 57 miles away from the site. Although
this camp is primitive meaning there are no facilities, we highly
recommend camping for the full wilderness experience. There is a nearby
Hot Springs about 10 miles down the road in a wonderful wilderness
location with no conveniences or amenities except for an outdoor shower.
There are pools near the Hot Springs that can be used for bathing, and
frequent journeys to the Hot Springs are a regular feature of our days.
This is a clothing optional Hot Springs but do bring a bathing suit as
sometimes families with children gather there.
Plan to arrive no later than 5 PM on
Sunday afternoon so you will have time to set up your camp before dark
and the evening meeting. We will break camp about Noon on
Wednesday. The days
will consist of beginning and advanced Shamanic Astrology classes with
Daniel and the nights will include Daniels night sky teachings. The last
night (Tuesday) features an opportunity to engage in an all night
Astrological Vision Quest. This is optional.
Flexibility is always a key factor at these
events, so the schedule may be adjusted to fit the needs of the campers as
a whole and there will be time for hiking and enjoying the area. We highly
recommend bringing warm blankets or sleeping bags for evening night sky
classes. You may wish to come prepared with drums, rattles, altar pieces
or any other ceremonial tools that feel appropriate to you.
This is a drug free event.
Some
suggestions on what to bring:
Food
(everyone is responsible for their own food) Ice for coolers is available
in nearby Dyer 15 miles away just a few miles past the Hotsprings. This is
an extremely small town but there is a gas station with a general store
and a pay phone.
Lots of
Drinking Water. This is
important as there is NO water at the camp site. Water is available at the
general store.
Tent and a
Sleeping Bag (rain is
always a possibility.) and other camping gear if you are camping
Layers of
clothes...the days are
usually quite warm and the nights cool or even chilly. Last year the days
were hot and windy and the nights cooled down, so plan accordingly. The
sun is intense so plan to cover up to avoid sun burn.
Folding Chair (nice for night sky and
daytime classes) or a blanket to sit on
A Small
Hand Shovel for
creative outdoor bathroom facilities and toilet paper
Your
Astrology Chart, Ephemeris
(if you have one), and the Venus/Mars
Booklet available through the Shamanic Astrology Website or at
the camp for $5
Notebook,
paper, pens etc.
Flashlight,
Camera, Towels, Sun Screen, Lip Balm, Hat, Binoculars
There is no shade at the camp site.
So, you might want to bring
some portable shade such as beach umbrella, or portable awning or
canopy.. Also worth considering is bringing a
Solar Shower although you can get an out door shower at the Hot Springs.
The most important thing to bring is an
intent to have fun while learning more about the interrelated mysteries of
Earth and Sky. Please do remember this is a drug free event.
And finally we ask that you keep in mind
this is an unpolluted sacred outdoor site. The only traces of humanity
here are the ancient petroglyphs and rock rings. Our intent is to honor
this sacred site and to make as little an environmental impact upon the site
as possible, leaving behind only our footprints and tire tracks, which the
wind and rain erases. Plan to take your trash with you when you leave and
leave nothing behind including toilet paper. This is a sacred site and it
deserves our honor and respect. Gatherings have been occurring here now at
least once a year for the past 5 years and this site remains unpolluted.
Wild creatures live in the area including wild horses, and rattlesnakes.
Both have been sited and so far have not posed a threat. When we approach
these places with reverence and respect paying attention to and honoring
the land and the beings already present, the land and the beings welcome
our presence. We look forward to sharing this sacred time and place with
you.

Exact Details
On The 2004 Journey To Mexico To Be Announced
Join us for an
exiting optional international journey across the Border
Casas Grandes, Mexico and the Paquime Ruins
May , 2004
with Daniel Giamario, Carolyn Brent and Elon Yurwitz
We are offering a three
to five trip
to the northwestern part of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The highlights
of this trip are the Paquime Ruins and world class museum in Casa Grandes,
the village of Mata Ortiz and a visit to the Sotol Distillery in Janos. We
will also include a stop in Palomas and a visit to the Deming Museum, for
those who have the time. There is room for five people. The cost for all
travel, lodging in a very nice hotel and a guide is $200 per person
with five participants. Food is not included. Everyone will provide
or purchase their own food. Those who are interested need only bring a
passport and comfortable clothing and shoes.
Note from Daniel about the journey to
Paquime:
I recommend a great book called The Chaco
Meridian by Stephen Lekson. It tells the story of the remarkable
alignment of many ancient centers of spiritual and political power that
all lie on the same meridian, beginning with Chaco Canyon, then
extending north to Aztec and Salmon Ruin and south through the Mimbres
and then on to Paquime. He postulates that the same same cosmology and
the same cultural elite were behind the building of these centers. And
the one at Paquime was the largest and lasted well into the 15th
century, long after the collapse of the Chaco and Mimbreno areas. I am
really looking forward to this journey! Consider joining us.
Proposed Itinerary This
is the 2003 Itinerary and it will change in 2004 but this gives you an
idea of what we did and it was a lot of fun:

purest form, was also used as a medical remedy. The Sereque grows
abundantly in the Chihuahua desert and is
carefully selected for production of the smooth, natural tasting nectar.
This nectar is called "Sotol".
Sotol is a wonderful, natural

Additional Details:
Plan to arrive in time to gather at 7
pm for our opening circle on Wednesday
Mar 10. The course will complete by
Noon on Sunday March 14. Be sure to allow enough time for a leisurely
departure. The Tucson airport is about 30 minutes away and the Phoenix
airport is about 2 and hours if there are no traffic delays.
The classes are being held at Gael
Chilsons home. She lives outside of town on a rustic Old Mining Property
that her family took over in the early 40s. This area has been mined for
silver, and copper etc. It is interesting to note that the silver used to
craft the chalices for the San Xavier mission (very near by) came from
these local mines. San Xavier Mission is an Old Spanish Style mission
worth a visit.
The property is quiet and peaceful.
There are hills and places for roaming around during breaks. For those you
are interested be sure you have sturdy shoes as there are cactus and other
spiny plants. Gael says there is plenty of wildlife including Javelina,
Deer, and Hawks. There also have been very rare sightings of Bobcat, Coata
Mundi (an indigenous ringed tail cat) and Mountain Lion though it has been
many years since they have been observed. There is also a small stone
circle Gael has created with Solstice and Equinox alignments up on a hill
behind her house.
Accommodations:
Gael has room for people to stay or camp at her house. There is a bedroom
for rent for $25 a night. An old motor home is
also available for $25 a night. There is also a heated basement dormitory
situation for those who do not want to commute from Tucson or Green
Valley. There are cots and beds available if you bring your sleeping bag
and all she is asking is $6 a night donation to help cover the costs of
water etc., due to the remoteness of her land she has to haul her own
water. There is probably room for three or four people in the basement.
Another option is to bring your tent and camp in the yard with the same
donation request. Other options are to stay at a local motel or bed and
breakfast.
Local Motels
20 to 30 minutes from Gaels home.

Meals:
There is a kitchen available for those who plan to stay at Gaels place
with refrigerator and stove. Green Valley is about 20 minutes away with
several grocery stores, restaurants, fast food, Mexican, Chinese etc.
available. South Tucson is about 30 minutes away. If youd like to have
your meals prepared for you Gael is offering to provide meals for a cost
of $66. That covers 11 meals starting with
dinner on Wednesday to breakfast on Sunday. The meals will generally be vegetarian based, some
chicken may be offered and country style breakfast with eggs and potatoes.
These plans are tentative and open to suggestion. If you are interested in
this option please let us know ASAP. You are also welcome to bring your
own food to prepare in the kitchen. If you are bringing food to prepare it
is recommended to keep it simple. Water:
There is a Solid Carbon filtered drinking water system or you can bring
your own water to drink. Please be mindful that Gael has to haul her water
so conservation is appreciated.
Weather:
March in Tucson is warming up. The weather ranges from anywhere from the
60s to mid 80s during the day and is usually in the
40's to
50s at night.
Rain is possible, though not probable and always welcome in the desert.
Transportation:
Tucson is the closest major airport with most carriers servicing Tucson.
Airline flights by all major carriers are available into Phoenix Sky
Harbor Airport about 2 and a hours away. Car rentals are available
at both Tucson and Phoenix Airports. There is no Shuttle transport
available to Gaels house from either airport. However, you can take a
taxi from the Tucson airport for about $60 one way, or Gael has offered to
pick up people from the Tucson Airport for $20 to cover her gas and time.
Directions
to Gaels house from 1-19:
From I-10 get onto
I-19 going to Green Valley. There is only one direction from 1-10. From
I-19 take the San Xavier Mission exit just past the Valencia exit and turn
right at Stop sign. Follow the pavement, turn left onto Mission Road. It
is about 10 milesstay on Mission road and watch the speed limit signs.
Gaels house is on the right or west side of the road. It is the first
driveway after the second cattle guard (the first cattle guard is at the
beginning of the 10 miles on Mission road) with a blue and purple mailbox
and a driveway that rises steeply up the hill to a pink and grey two story
house.
